... I rebooted my computer, and although the missing icon continued to "hide", this time I was able to access it in the taskbar window within the control panel. I was not able to do this operation before rebooting. BTW: the official name of the icon is "network icon." Ta-daaaa! We're like snowflakes!

Set your primary logon to a network logon such as client for microsoft networks and reboot.
