network icon missing

I am running vista build 5384 from a clean install and just noticed that my network icon is now missing. It was there at first and now it is now where to be found. I can't find any option for enabeling the icon. I had both the wireless signal strenght icon and the network (2 computer screens) icons and both are missing. Any suggestions as to how I may get them back?

I can't find an option anywhere to enable these icons. Any suggestion as to how I can get the wireless connection and network icons back?

Update: I found the option within the properties for the start menu, but I am unable to select the nework check box because it is greyed out. What would be causing this?
